The Automated Checkout Trap

Most retail executives are currently obsessed with "frictionless" shopping. They see videos of Amazon Go and dream of slashing their labor costs to zero. They think that by installing smart cameras and weight sensors, they will solve their margin problems. They are wrong. For 95% of retailers, the investment required to reach a fully automated checkout state will never see a positive return on investment.

Implementing a "Just Walk Out" system costs approximately $1 million for a small convenience store. If your average ticket is $15 and your net margin is 4%, you need to sell to 1.6 million customers just to pay for the hardware. This doesn't even account for the ongoing cloud computing costs or the specialized maintenance teams you'll need to hire.
